Hair and Makeup at Thuy

Hair and Makeup at Thuy

Along with a great collection, one of the most prominent beauty trends of the season, the red lip, was seen at Thuy. We got a chance to peek behind the backstage doors to get a sneak peek on the beauty and hair styles seen at the Thuy show. To create the red lip, the lead makeup artist for the show, Lottie, used Make Up Forever's Flash Color #1 and Flash Color #17 to stain the lips. An insider tip from Lottie is to blot the color with your fingertips to get the soft matte blended look seen on the runway. Finish the look off with Make Up Forever's Smoky Lash Mascara.

For the ethereal gold sheeny look on the eyes, Lottie used Make Up Forever's Star Powder #920 from lid till the brow bone. To achieve this look at home, she recommends to "pick your favorite shade, apply it lightly over the lid and layer Make Up Forever's Gold Star Powder over the entire lid and all the way up into the brows". As can be seen from the photo below, to nail the runway look, take the Star Powder past your brows, extending all the way to the temples.

Rodney Cutler created a voluminous straight look on the models' hair for the show. His inspiration came from a blend of the hard hair look of rock & roll and Thuy's collection which was soft and jewel toned. Cutler used Redken Guts to create volume and Cutler Volumizing spray on the roots for support. He showed me his own stylist's trick he used for the show to create hard volume at the roots while keeping the tips movable - just backcomb the roots with a soft bristled brush and flat iron the backcombed portion to lock in the volume.

Fall Trend Report: Vampires at Fashion Week Fall 2010

Between Twilight, Vampire Diares, and True Blood, we've spent the past year or so obsessing over vampires. No surprise we're not alone and some of the vampire culture seeped into fashion week for Fall 2010. Rachel Hayes, our friend and colleague at Daily Makeover, gave her take on the trend:

Vampire Makeup

The idea of a paper white pale, skeletal, and unemotional models lurking around with dark makeup on is nothing new to Fashion Week. But thanks to the apparently undying obsession with all things vampire, this lifeless beauty trend now seems to have more romanticism, and maybe even more appeal. At the Georges Chakra Fall 2010 fashion show (at right), MAC makeup artist Gregory Arlt kept models faces very pale and focused on a dark lip using MAC Diva lipstick. "The lipstick is the color of dried blood. I call it glampire beauty," he says. "The look reminds me of a 400 year old glamorous vampire that makes you ask--is she dead or alive? It's more along the lines of an Anne Rice novel rather than today's Twilight vampire." Models at the Doo Ri Fall 2010 fashion show (shown above) had blood red lips topped with glitter, bringing the glampire theme to new heights.

While the vampy red lip could be a real "do" for next fall, there's another version of vampire makeup that's a "don't" for most of us. The beauty look for Cushnie et Ochs (shown left) was equally undead, but focused on a sunken eye effect and the entire face didn't have a hint of blood circulation--a look definitely better left for the catwalk than the sidewalk.

Get the Look: Lancôme at The Row Debut

the Row

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen debuted their new collection, The Row this week. Lancôme’s creative director for makeup Aaron De Mey was responsible for the look that "focused on strong, defined brows and a dewy complexion." We're happy to see some eyebrows on the models who have otherwise been bleaching them away or covering them up with powder. We saw a similar look at Halston by MAC but it was more matte, more structured and there were no brows.

The Rpw makeup

Here's how Aaron did it:
To prep, Aaron used Lancôme Eau Fraiche Douceur Micellar Cleansing Water and followed it with Lancôme Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate massaged generously into the skin; this duo gave each model a luminous complexion. Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre filled and defined the brows—a focal point of this look. To finish, Aaron dabbed Lancôme Effeacernes Concealer on the lips, a trick that removed the natural lip color and kept the focus squarely on the brows.

Mary-Kate and Ashley chose a deep wine colored polish –Lancôme Le Vernis in Untamed Plum – for the toes to complement the made-for-the-show Louboutin sandals, but kept the fingernails clean and shiny with a coat of clear nail polish.

Beauty from Lela Rose Fall 2010

A celestial beauty on the Lela Rose Fall 2010 runway.

Here's one look of show that's standing out amidst all the bold, urban, and even vampire-inspired beauty trends we've seen at Fall 2010 Fashion Week: Lela Rose looked up to the sky, the moon, and the stars for the beauty inspiration of her fall 2010 fashion show.

Makeup artist Tina Turnbow for Beauty.com created a moonlight smokey eye effect using a shimmery dark gray eye shadow (from the Tarte Eye Couture Palette). "The color looks like the midnight sky and the irridesence is reminiscent of the stars," she says. "The shape of the eye shadow is spherical because it goes well into the inner corners, which makes it look round like a planet and opens up the eye." Even the lip has a celestial twist. "It's a cloudy sheer white gloss," says Turnbow. The models' nails were painted with Deborah Lippmann Across The Universe nail polish, a midnight blue with lots of sparkle--another nod to the sky and the stars.

For hair, Ted Gibson for Beauty.com (recently famed for his recent Kate Gosselin makeover) created a polished and sophisticated French twist. He whipped up lots of volume and texture using Build It Blow-Dry Spray while blow-drying, then shaped the back of the twist into a crescent moon to top off the lunar-inspired look.

Fall Trend Report: Red Lipstick

Amber Katz of Daily Makeover shared her favorite Red Lips for Fall:

Lipstick lovers always look forward to fall because it's the season of the bold lip. If you're not yet ready to plunge into the deep hues of the glampire beauty trend, there are many interpretations of the more classic crimson look. Oh, and stop making fun of your mother about her lip pencil: The formerly eschewed makeup implement is making a major comeback this fall. Get your sharpeners ready: Here are our favorite red lip looks of the season.

At Richard Chai, Gucci Westman for Revlon keyed makeup. Lips were defined with new-for-fall Revlon Suede Rhapsody Multi-Use Palette, set to launch in September 2010. First, Gucci applied ColorStay Lip Liner in Red all over the lip as a base, then painted on the deeper red lipstick from the palette which created a matte effect. "The clothes don't have a lot of color, so I felt a pop of pigment was needed on the lips," explains Westman.

red lips vivienne tam

China dolls were the beauty inspiration at Vivienne Tam, where makeup lead Charlotte Willer for Maybelline created a bright defined red lip look that was tempered by fresh skin and punctuated by a defined brow. To get such a precise defined lip look, Willer lined and filled lips in with Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liner in 50 Red, a gorgeous garnet. "It's an Asian red, which echoes Vivienne's collection," Willer explained. The color and texture was perfect--no additional lipstick was used.

Another stunning, sculpted red lip took center stage at Herve Léger, as it's known to do--this is no understudy red. Lisa Butler for MAC cosmetics created a strong, matte lip with MAC Lipstick in Lady Danger, a cult favorite orange-red. Gals with pink skin tones need not shy away from this warm red. Per Butler, "Simply toning down the pinkness in the cheeks with a bit of foundation and skipping blush will prepare even a cooler-complexioned girl for this type of yellow-based red."

The Surf Lodge Outpost at the MAC/Milk Studios

Along with all of the refreshing changes MAC and Milk have brought to fashion week (Indoor plumbing! Friendly staff!) is the pop up Surf Lodge outpost. We stopped by last night to grab a fish taco, enjoy our most favorite cocktail ever, the Endless Summer, and catch up with friends.

We were pleasantly surprised to see chef Sam Talbot there himself serving up food and managing the grill. Check out the waitress' cute dress from Loomstate.

Band of Outsiders Fall 2010

We stopped by the Band of Outsiders presentation last night at the MAC/Milk Studios. We were too enchanted by the sets to really notice the clothes. We tweeted that it was like the morning after the Ice Storm, meaning that it felt like spoiled rich kids from Connecticut had broken into their parents liquor stash and thrown a party.

The bedazzled walkie talkie was a huge hit.

We personally loved the vintage luggage.

The Red Dress Show 2010

The Red Dress Show--to raise awareness of heart disease in women-- is always our favorite way to kick off fall fashion week. The star-studded show always has lots of energy and plenty of fun. Our faves from this year:

Estelle got our vote for best dressed in this patchwork Zac Posen.
Felicity Huffman in Oscar de la Renta was too cute as she snuck off the stage to give hubby William H. Macy a kiss.

Joan Collins wins it for "Diva of the Show"

A few of the ladies had problems with their shoes. Raven-Symone in Tadashi Shoji kicked hers 6-inch stilletos off at the end.

Olympic medalist Dara Torres in Rachel Roy didn't even bother with hers. As we tweeted, the barefoot look works when your tall and ripped!

We suspect Pauley Perrette  had a little too much liquid courage by the way she wobbled down the runway. The shoes were gone when it was time for her to walk the finale.

Heidi Klum in gorgeous John Galliano showed all the ladies how walking down the runway is done!

Backstage Interview with Gwen Stefani

Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Week started today, and Daily Makeover kicked it off backstage at L.A.M.B. with designer Gwen Stefani. She gave us an exclusive look into what inspires her, how she creates that fab red lip (girlfriend does her own makeup!) and what beauty look her husband can't get enough of.

What inspired the beauty look for the L.A.M.B. show?

The collection is based on a vintage, naughty, Hollywood starlet girl, a little bit of a modern, futuristic girl and a little bit of a soldier girl. I found these Ellen von Unwerth pictures with black makeup and the dark lips [that I loved] so we're going to do the hair very set, vintage and glamorous with a lot of bangs.

The thing that I've learned is that you have an inspiration, you have a picture, an idea and it just evolves into what it's going to be. You don't consider when you come up with three ideas for a theme that you're going to have a blizzard, a baby with an ear infection and the Chinese new year, but at the end of the day the creative process of having that pressure and that drama means you come up with things you normally wouldn't. I can't wait to see it all together. For me, it's all about that part with the music and seeing the girls.

Red lips are a big beauty trend we're seeing for Fall 2010. The red lipstick look is already one of your trademarks!

I just love when things that I love come back into style. I don't have one specific red lipstick that I use. MAC's sponsoring the show today, so [lead makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury] put a mixture of four different reds on me. I know she definitely used Russian Red. I tend to go more for the blue-reds than the orange-reds--I think they look better on me.

My husband [musician Gavin Rossdale] actually really likes [red lips] so whenever I don't wear them he's like "Wait, where are the lips?" So I like that Hollywood glamorous look and I always have and always will...I'm kind of stuck in my own ways.
