Tropic Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo With Shea Butter

Promises: Gently Cleans & Conditions Hair, Restores Moisture & Promotes Healthy Scalp. Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil does not contain Sulfates, Alcohol and other potentially harmful chemicals used in commercial shampoos. It's 100% Natural.

Directions: Not listed on the bottle.

Ingredients: Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Pimento Oil, Aloe Vera, Lavender and Lemon, Rosemary Extract, Shea Butter, Organic Saponified Oils of Coconut, Olive, Jojoba, Vegetable Gum, Glycerin Extract.

The Truth: Overall, Jamaican Black Shampoo is great! It's sulfate free, moisturizes and cleanses the hair very well. At first I didn't like it because it left a weird film/greasy feeling on my hair making it feel coated yet moisturized and soft at the same time. It was so foreign to me, but after getting the proper knowledge and finishing my wash day regimen steps, I noticed that my hair was noticeably thicker, fuller, and moist after air drying - not just on my wash day, but days later too. I highly recommend this shampoo for relaxed ladies but especially for naturals (both adults and kids).

Tips:
Prepoo with Jamaican Black Castor Oil first then shampoo.

Price:
$10.99 USD 8 Fl. Oz

Mane N Tail Detangler - The Tangles and Knots Solution

Promises: Now you can discover the secret behind luxuriously silky, healthy hair. Our exclusive pH balanced detangler formula is easy to use and helps eliminate tangles and knots and the appearance of dry split ends while adding additional conditioning and styling benefits. Your hair becomes easily manageable with a rich and luxurious shine.

Directions: Liberally spray Mane 'n Tail Detangler onto dry or damp hair. Work formula through, making sure it covers and reaches all of the hair. DO NOT RINSE OUT. Comb out hair with a large tooth comb or brush. Results are a super slip that allows hair to respond to styling effortlessly. Style as usual.

Ingredients: Water, Dimethicone, PEG 7 Amodimethicone, Horsetail Leaf Extract, Chaprarral Extract, Colts Foot Flower Extract, Horse Chestnut Seed Extract, Meadowsweet Flower Extract, Clover Flower Extract, Fragrance, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Trideceth-6.

The Truth: This is the first detangler I've ever tried so my opinion may be a little bias. Sorry. This product did EVERYTHING it said it would. The promises were fulfilled. I sprayed it directly on my new growth, just before relaxer day. PLEASE don't try this at home. I took a risk because the next say was my relaxer day and I REFUSED to relax my new growth with tangles and end up with breakage. So I sprayed it in my dry 12 week post new growth. I let it sit for a few mintues and then I began detangling with a wide tooth comb. Honestly, I never witnessed my tangles and knots melt so fast. My hair felt very soft afterward. I combed my hair from root to tip with ease!! This solution gave my hair incredible slip & moisture even until the next day. Guess what? When I relaxed (with ORS Olive Oil Lye Normal Strength Relaxer), I didn't burn NOT ONE BIT. Now I don't mind stretching my relaxers to 12 weeks because I have a solution = Mane 'n Tail Detangler!!!

Tips:
I highly recommend this detangler for children, transitioners and naturals who frequently experience knots and tangles.

Price:
$5.99 CAD 12 Fl. Oz

Creme Of Nature Sunflower & Coconut Detangling Conditioning Shampoo

Regular Formula for Normal Hair.

Promises:
A new Creme of Nature detangling and conditioning shampoo, featuring organic sunflower and coconut oils to gently cleanse and condition, leaving the hair soft and silky.

Directions:
Wet hair. Apply shampoo and work into lather. Rinse thoroughly. Repeat. Next, condition with Creme of Nature conditioner.

Ingredients: Water - Aqua , Sodium Laureth Sulfate , Cocamidopropyl Betaine , Glycol Stearate , Polyquaternium-10 , Cocamide DEA , Amodimethicone , Polysorbate 20 , Polyquaternium-7 , Isostearyl Ethylimidazoliniumethosulfate , Citric Acid , Tetrasodium EDTA , Coconut Oil (Certified Organic), Sunflower Seed Oil (Certified Organic), Peppermint Leaf Extract, Basil Extract, Polygala Senega Root Extract , Watercress Extract, Sage Leaf Extract, Thyme Extract, Rosemary Leaf Extract, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Glycerin , Fragrance - Parfum , Benzyl Benzoate , Coumarin , Hydroxycitronellal , Limonene , Linalool , Methylparaben , Propylparaben , Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone , Red 4 - CI 14700 , Yellow 5 - CI 19140 , Red 33 - CI 17200 , Blue 1 - CI 42090.

The Truth: Finally!! Okay, I've been secretly itching to try this shampoo for a while now based on the good reviews that I've read. I pretty much have my staple shampoo's, however, I wanted to try this one out to see how it compares to the original shampoo and if I could recommend it to other folks.

I'm shocked to say that you can't even tell that this is a sulfate shampoo. It detangled, cleansed and moisturized my hair all in one shot. The creamy liquid easily penetrated and melted my tangles away effortlessly. This shampoo restored my natural moisture balance and smoothed out my cuticles allowing them to lay flat preventing dryness & flyaways. After drying my hair with the t-shirt method, my hair literally felt soft and silky :-)

It was very gentle on my hair despite the fact that it contains the sodium laureth sulfate detergent (since you barely recognize it, I don't know why they added it). Overall, I was extremely pleased with the results I achieved with this shampoo. I would highly recommend it.

Price: $5.99 -7 CAD 8.45 Fl. Oz.

Update On The Udo's Oil Blend 3-6-9 & Multi-Vitamins

Back in October 2009, I started taking Progressive Women Multi-Vitamins along with Udo's Oil 3,6,9 Blend (look here for a quick recap) for overall health. I took these supplements consistently (until finished) and I did see an improvement in my skin and nails.

The multi-vitamins were somewhat annoying because you have to take 3 pills daily and majority of the time I took 1-2 a day since I would always forget. My skin looked vibrant and remained somewhat clear of acne (did get a few pimples here & there). My nails stopped breaking and started to grow strong. Overall, the vitamins were good. I had high hopes that it would perform better, but I should have taken it the right way in order to see optimal results. Next time around I will buy a vitamin that only requires me to take it 1-2 times daily.

The taste of the Udo's 3-6-9 Oil Blend was AWFUL!! (kind of a nutty flavor). I dreaded taking it every single day. Most days I had to chug it down with juice, food....whatever I could find!! I promised myself that when I finished the bottle, I would purchase capsules (no taste) so that I wouldn't have to go through that horrible process again. I must say that it did improve my digestion where food was concerned. No bloating or heaviness after eating :-)

Oh, I almost forgot, NEVER take this oil on an empty stomach or else you will feel extremely sick and nauseated. That was another "con" in my opinion. If I do repurchase this product, I will purchase it in capsule form.

ION Effective Care Intensive Therapy Treatment

Promises: Ion Effective Care Intensive Therapy Treatment contains Panthenol Pro-vitamin B5 and Hydrolyzed Vegetable protein to form a two-in-one moisturizer and protein fortifier to rehydrate and repair dry, damaged hair.

  • Panthenol Adds Body and Shine
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein re-hydrates and repairs
  • Adds strength and condition to damaged hair

Directions: After shampooing, rinse hair thoroughly and towel blot. Apply Ion Effective Care Intensive Therapy Treatment and work through hair or comb-blend for even coverage. For excessively dry, damaged hair, apply additional treatment to hair ends. Leave in hair 5 to 10 mins. Rinse thoroughly.

Ingredients: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Dicetyldimonium Chloride, Stearalkonium Chloride, Distearyldimonium Chloride, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Stearamine Oxide, Panthenol, Lecithin, PEG-5 Soy Sterol, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Laureth-12, Methylparaben, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Citric Acid, Fragrance, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene.

The Truth: After one use, I had already felt the difference in my hair. By difference I mean, my hair had a thicker appearance and of course the texture & strength improved as well. After rinsing out the treatment, my hair felt heavier leading me to believe that my hair was fortified and well conditioned (retained moisture). I witnessed little to no breakage afterward, which is plus!!

For those who are familiar with ION products, this particular treatment is a combination of the Ion Moisturizing Solutions Treatment & the Ion Repair Solutions Hair Reconstructor Treatment, in one product. This is a light protein treatment (with moisturizers), so it can be used weekly if you are relaxed or color-treated. I used it weekly with no problems!

I normally used it with heat for 15-20mins under my hooded dryer and then followed up with a moisture rich deep conditioner to soften my hair up. The scent and consistency reminds me of Nexxus Humectress conditioner, and as a bonus, it doesn't contain silicone or mineral oil (which I know, many of you would love). Overall, I liked it a lot and I would definitely re-purchase. You can purchase this at any Sally Beauty Supply Store.

Tips: Use as a prepoo treatment on dry hair for 15-20mins with heat (30mins without heat), shampoo and then follow up with a moisture based deep conditioner for 20mins with heat (45mins-1 hr without heat). Do this once a week for stronger healthier hair.

Price:
$14.49 CAD 16oz

Nu-Gro Hair Care Product Review

Shampoo

Promises: For Thinning or Balding Promotes Hair Growth, Thicker Hair and Healing Damaged Hair. Made with 100% Natural Herbs & Vitamins. Money-Back Guarantee.

Directions: Wet hair, lather and rinse thoroughly.

Ingredients: Parsley, Garlic, Nettle, Burdock, Horsetail Coltsfoot, Rosemary Leaf, Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, Safflower Oil, Castor Oil, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Paba Panthenol (B-5), Vitamin E & D, Aloe Vera, Honey, Avocado Oil, Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearalkonium Chloride, Honey, Sweet Almond Oil, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Apple Pectin Extract, Propylene Glycol, Dicetyldimonium Chloride, Fragrance, Citric Acid, Polymethoxy Bicyclic Oxazolidine, FD&C Blue No.1 (Ci 42090), FD&C Yellow No.5 (Ci 19140), FD&C Red No.4 (Ci 14700), FD&C Red No.33 (Ci 17200).

The Truth: I found this shampoo very stripping. I don't understand why since there are zero sulfates in it. It doesn't lather well either. Through experience, I've learned that opaque shampoo's (a white creamy texture) tend to be more moisturizing - this wasn't. After a few washes with this shampoo, I noticed my hair feeling very dry and somewhat tangled. I also noticed an increase in shedding. It just wasn't for me. On a brighter note, the scent is very nice! It reminds me of cherries or candy. Overall, I do not like this shampoo. If you have this shampoo and you are experiencing the same results, pre-poo treatment before hand with oil, conditioner or a combination of both.

Moisturizing Conditioner

Promises: For Thinning or Balding. Dry Hair Formula. Made with 100% Natural Herbs & Vitamins.

Directions: After shampooing, Apply to hair. Wait 1 minute, then rinse.

Ingredients: Parsley, Garlic, Nettle, Burdock, Horsetail Coltsfoot, Rosemary Leaf, Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, Safflower Oil, Castor Oil, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Paba Panthenol (B-5), Vitamin E & D, Aloe Vera, Honey, Avocado Oil, Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearalkonium Chloride, Honey, Sweet Almond Oil, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Apple Pectin Extract, Propylene Glycol, Dicetyldimonium Chloride, Fragrance, Citric Acid, Polymethoxy Bicyclic Oxazolidine, FD&C Blue No.1 (Ci 42090), FD&C Yellow No.5 (Ci 19140), FD&C Red No.4 (Ci 14700), FD&C Red No.33 (Ci 17200).

The Truth: The consistency of this conditioner was very different. It felt very liquid-y and thin, however, it quickly dissolves/penetrates into the hair when applying - which is a good thing. I easily found myself using more than I needed because it's not thick (I'm so used to piling on conditioner..LOL, a little amount does the trick. I've used this conditioner with heat as a deep conditioner for 30mins and as a co-wash. Both methods made my hair INCREDIBLY soft (almost cottony)
to the touch, it also had great movement and fullness. Remember, this conditioner has NO CONES so you know it's the natural ingredients going to work. Two thumbs up!

Deep Conditioner

Promises: Use to GROW, THICKEN and HEAL Damaged Hair.

Directions: After shampooing, apply generous amount of Deep Conditioner. Place cap on for 10 minutes (20-30w/out cap). Rinse thoroughly. Style as usual.

Ingredients: Water, Parsley, Garlic, Nettle, Burdock, Horsetail Coltsfoot, Rosemary Leaf, Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, Safflower Oil, Castor Oil, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Paba Panthenol (B-5), Vitamin E & D, Aloe Vera, Honey, Avocado Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearalkonium Chloride, Honey, Sweet Almond Oil, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Apple Pectin Extract, Propylene Glycol, Dicetyldimonium Chloride, Fragrance, Citric Acid, Polymethoxy Bicyclic Oxazolidine, FD&C Blue No.1 (Ci 42090), FD&C Yellow No.5 (Ci 19140), FD&C Red No.4 (Ci 14700), FD&C Red No.33 (Ci 17200).

The Truth: Fabulous Deep Conditioner! Each and every time I use this product, my hair becomes smooth, supple and manageable for days. I don't have to add any oils to this conditioner because there are so many goodies (7) in it. The presence of protein (Hydrolyzed Keratin) doesn't phase me because this conditioner is extremely moisturizing and this ingredient is towards the bottom of the list. I've used it after shampooing and on dry hair for 30mins with my hooded dryer & hair therapy wrap with great results. The consistency & ingredients are very similar to the Moisturizing Conditioner. When applying it to the hair you'll feel as though the conditioner is not even there since it dissolves quickly and doesn't leave behind a "white creamy look" on the hair. I was shocked when this deep conditioner softened my hair and detangled my 6 weeks post new growth. Oh wait, I must say though, it does not have a pleasant scent because upon opening the jar, I was immediately hit with the garlic aroma along with the smell of the other extracts/herbs. Fortunately, the weird smell does not linger in the hair after drying. Overall, I like it!

Leave-In Spray w/Moisturizer

Promises: Promotes Fast hair Growth, thicker hair, healing damaged hair.

Directions:
Use spray daily to grow and moisturize hair, giving it body, bounce and shine. Spray on after hair is styled.

Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Parsley, Garlic, Irish Moss, Indian Hemp, Rosemary, Nettle, Burdock, Horsetail Coltsfoot, Lemon Verbena, Sage, Myrrh, Coconut Oil, Marigold, Biotin Birch, Lavender Oil, Jojoba Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Fragrance, Paba Panthenol (B-5), Vitamin E, Vitamin A and D, Aloe Vera, Honey, Avocado Oil.

The Truth: This is by far my favourite Nu-Gro Product! This stuff is the truth!!! Honestly. I love how it thickens (due to the panthenol), hydrates and softens my hair. I think the combination of oils and extracts really help to tame my hair (reduce frizz), especially while stretching my relaxer. The spray smells like candy/cherries yet resembles water, since it's completely clear and easily penetrates into the hair. I use it as a leave-in after I rinse out the Nu-Gro Deep Conditioner/moisturizing conditioner or as a daily moisturizer then seal with the Nu-Gro Butter. It's a good combination. I was really impressed with this leave-in.

Hair-Gro Butter

Promises:
"Petroleum-Free" formula is designed to grow, thicken and heal damaged

Directions: Apply to Scalp Daily

Ingredients: Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Parsley, Garlic, Nettle, Burdock, Horsetail Coltsfoot, Jojoba Oil, Safflower Oil, Castor Oil, Fragrance, Paba Panthenol (B-5), Vitamin E and D.

The Truth: The fragrance of this product is very peculiar. It's so hard to describe but it kind of smells like coco butter. The light olive green consistency reminds me of mousse since it's extremely fluffy and light like whipped butter.

Use a small amount because a little goes a long way. When you rub the butter in between your hands it melts right away and turns clear. I've never experienced build up or a weird film on my hair with this product. I've used this butter on my edges, nape and to seal in moisture daily. It locks in moisture very well & produces a nice healthy shine in the hair, so it's great as a finishing product.

Overall, the Nu-Gro Line is very good and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for natural products without the presence of sulfates, cones, or parabens. This line truly moisturizes the hair and comes with everything (shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioner etc.) you need to start off your healthy hair care regimen at a reasonable price. I've used this line for approx. 2 weeks now and I haven't noticed an increase in thickness or growth, I guess it will take more time :) I like this line a lot, unfortunately, I don't care for the shampoo.

Lavender Jamaican Black Castor Oil - Love it or Hate it?

Lately, many have been inquiring as to whether or not I've tried the New Lavender Jamaican Black Castor Oil and how I like it. I'll be more than happy to answer those questions:

Have your tried the Lavender Jamaican Black Castor Oil?

- Yes, I have.

Do you like it?

- Yes!! It's a fabulous product :-)

How long have you been using it?

- For about 1-2 weeks now.

What do you like about it?

- The scent of course!! As soon as you open the bottle and take a sniff, you barely smell that over-barring burnt smokey scent. The lavender smell is very relaxing. I find that when I apply it, my hair smells very fresh and clean. The Lavender scent lingers for few hours. However, I've never had a problem with the original scent (I guess I just got used to it).

Would you replace the Original JBCO for the Lavender JBCO?

- To be honest, no. I think I will use both but alternate between the two. I've never had a problem with the original, so I don't see the need to replace it.

Overall, how would you rate the New Lavender Jamaican Black Castor Oil?

- I give it 2 thumbs up!! I also like how the label reads "No Salt". That's a bonus!

Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream

Promises: Our Burdock Root Butter Cream is a light, water based leave-in for fine haired naturals, straight styles and those looking for a light penetrating moisturizer. It conditions and softens while nourishing the scalp. Leaves hair healthy, soft and supple!

Directions: Rub a small to moderate amount between palms and distribute throughout wet, damp or dry hair. Leave in and style.

Ingredients: Distilled Water, Olive Oil, Extracts of Burdock Root, Nettle and Oatstraw, MSM sulfur, Vegetable Glycerin, Wheat Extract, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Stearalkonium Chloride, Vitamin E, Lactic Acid, Maltodextrin, Phenoxyethanol & Ethylhexylglycerin, Essential Oil Blend.

The Truth: I've been using Burdock Root for a little over a month now and I must say that it's a great "protein/silicone-free" moisturizer. It actually softens and moisturizes my hair so well without a greasy weighed down feeling. What I love most about this moisturizer, is that it has a perfect blend of some of my favorite ingredients i.e. Glycerin, Wheat, Fatty Alcohols, Stearalkonium Chloride etc. all working together to combat dryness and breakage. It has a very creamy texture but easily dissolves into the hair once applied. You don't need a lot of product to get the job done, it's very concentrated. The "citrus-y" scent kind of reminds me of lemons, however, the smell doesn't linger in the hair for too long. I've tried this moisturizer on wet, damp and dry hair and I must say that it's phenomenal for braid out's when done on wet/damp hair. The next day your hydrated waves will have a fierce pop with added softness & shine. I love it.

Tips: Great for baggying, braid outs, twist outs, buns and straight styles!
